Thursday, July 17 marked the day when hundreds of BWHers and members of the community came together to celebrate the hospital’s diversity at the 14th Annual Street Beat festivities. The event fell on a perfect summer day complete with bright sunshine and perfectly pleasant temperatures, allowing people to fully enjoy music and entertainment, browse arts and crafts and experience the gusto of traditional cuisine from all over the world. Celebrating Our Diversity was this year’s theme, a motif reflected on the new 2003 Street Beat T-shirt logo designed by Vivian Simonelli, administrative and program coordinator, Organizational Development, Training and Diversity Management. The logo featured silhouettes swerving around musical notes. “Music is a part of almost every celebration. As musical notes live on one common scale, we live on one common ground. The diversity of the notes gives music its unique quality. Diversity of people makes us all unique,” wrote Simonelli, when designing the emblem. On this day, familiar rhythms echoed throughout the community when the sound of cool jazz and contagious reggae bands warmed the crowd, evoking a sense of cultural enchantment. The “beat” went on for six uninterrupted hours, bringing to life the spirit of the BWH community. “Year after year, Street Beat is an event that I truly enjoy planning because it gives me an opportunity to bring people together,” said Jacqueline Ashby, special events coordinator, Perks Office and Staff Activities Program.
